Challenge Grün statt Grau

GRÜNSTATTGRAU

Let’s make our cities greener!

How might we motivate more people to engage in developing green infrastructures, so we can increase the percentage of green spaces by 20% until 2025?

Due to climate change and the current infrastructure that is prevalent in cities (high percentage of sealed surfaces, lack of green spaces), new solutions for improving the live quality in urban areas are needed.

Therefore, GRÜNSTATTGRAU as the Austrian competence centre for greening buildings wants to find and develop new services we can offer in the future to shape smart, green and liveable cities of the future.

Furthermore, we want to find new solutions of interacting with companies, citizens and municipalities in order to accelerate the implementation of Nature Based Solutions.

Additionally, we are highly interested in innovative ideas for digitalising, quantifying and further developing green infrastructures as well as promoting knowledge transfer between citizens, research and practice.

As a holistic competence centre for greening buildings we promote innovation and the delivery of green and smart cities of the future. As an interface between our network partners from the public sector, science and research we practice sharing of best practice. We thereby give impulses for the deployment of existing and new technologies, competences and services. In addition to a sustainable market development, we secure the affordability of technology and its broad application. In the long-term, we promote quality assurance and create a new awareness for the range of benefits of greened buildings in the context of climate change and energy. Being involved in various national and international research projects regarding the implementation of green infrastructure has shaped the way we work and develop new ideas.

Negative changes in live quality, Urban Heat Islands, lack of biodiversity, increase of pollution, higher percentage of sealed surfaces, rainwater management problems, negative health impact.

In terms of Output:

5 new services that GRÜNSTATTGRAU can offer in the future, new ideas for working together with citizens and companies (apps, network, ideas for research and practice projects)

In terms of Outcome:

Success means – new NBS (Nature Based Solutions) product ideas, higher percentage of green spaces, reduction of Urban Heat Island (UHIs) (quantified through monitoring equipment), engagement of the population, positive thinking of nature based solutions, building the brand GRÜNSTATTGRAU.

New and innovative forms of green roof and green wall systems (products), ideas for explanatory videos and interactive online tools, media possibilities to gain people’s attraction, knowledge transfer possibilities, services for visualisation or simulation, quantifying the effects of greening, DIY greening products, low tech solutions (like BeRTA), services for clarifying the needs of citizens in various urban districts, user-oriented services, a network of motivated and interested companies and citizens, efficient ways to inform people about current innovations and possibilities in the world of building greenery, evaluating the status quo of quality.

We are the interface between our network partners from the public sector and research and  share best practice. We thereby give impulses for the deployment of existing and new technologies, competences and services. A sustainable development of the market is as important to us as the affordability of technology and its broad application. In the long-term, we promote quality assurance and create a new awareness for the range of benefits of greened buildings in the context of climate change and energy. Interdisciplinary know-how, a wide network and and up-to-date information about current research developments are some of the things we can offer to start-ups participating in our challenge. Furthermore, partnerships, visibility, interesting collaborations and new contacts establish a win-win situation for both the start-ups and GRÜNSTATTGRAU.

Internal Stakeholders:

  • GSG-Team

  • GSG technical committees, working groups, boards (scientific, business & advisory)

The internal stakeholders will be engaged by communicating the possible advantages of cooperating with start-ups. If the upcoming ideas from the participants align with already existing strategies, further steps will be taken.

  • The external stakeholders will be engaged when specific expertise is needed and more concrete tasks have been defined.
