Why we do what we do

Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the core piece of the new Agenda 2030 (Transforming our World – The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development), which was signed by the 193 member countries of the United Nations. The 17 SDGs came into effect on 1 January 2016 and are building on the Millennium Development Goals that were pursued globally until 2015.

The 17 goals are specified as 169 targets that involve social, ecological and economic challenges touching areas of critical importance: People, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership. The intensive work of public and private stakeholders and civil engagement resulted in a comprehensive, far reaching and people centred set of universal and transformative goals and targets.

The integrated nature of the 17 goals makes them indivisible and for their accomplishment all countries are asked to make a combined effort. Each country faces specific challenges with different national realities and capacities, which is another necessity to join forces globally.

Role of businesses for implementing the SDGs:

Companies have a pivotal role for the pursuit of the SDGs. Especially in the topics of human rights, labour standards, environmental protection and fight against corruption, companies can make a contribution towards a transformed world.

Being aware of their social responsibility, business leaders can take this as an opportunity to follow sustainability trends and to develop new business strategies in order to reduce risks coming from the climate crisis, resource scarcities or demographic change.

Many companies have already recognised the opportunities and the urgency of the SDGs for the resilience of their business and are being aware that their long-term success depends on the inclusion of social and ecological issues. Innovative sources, new markets and the societal acceptance of economic activities are interconnected with solutions for global challenges via the SDGs.
